Oakland's SOUND ROOM run by the sweetest couple on the planet (Karen and Robert) who began presenting in their own home years ago. Finally moving into a professional space 3 years ago that has now been taken away from them. BUT, they have found a new room which will open in 2018. The “masterclass” part of the performance will occur during the 7:30-8:30 time slot and will be conducted by Kellye Gray. Two “emerging artists” groups will share the hour and work with the house group in a public masterclass. The groups which should have the same instrumentation and musical approach as the house band will apply to Jazz in the Neighborhood. Applicants must have a recommendation from their teacher or coach and will be notified at least three weeks prior to their performance.
Kellye is the guest vocalist with the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra at the subterranean, North Beach venue Doc's Lab. This 17-piece jazz orchestra takes on arrangements from Kellye's Texas Music tribute as well as other well-known jazz standards.
It's a great room, not large. Good food and drinks. Always some amazing student group that opens the show.
